千一夜物語

１９７０年６月にアメリカ・ペンシルバニア州の Lehigh 大学で開催された第４４回 コロイド・シンポジウムにおいて，ポリウォーターに関する集会が開かれた。この会には，Derjaguin をはじめとして，すべての関係者が出席している。翌年に発刊されたJournal of Colloid and Interface Science ８月号は，その全号を割いて，この時発表された論文，討論（の一部），当時までに発表されたポリウォーターの文献のリストを掲載している。そのなかで，Lippincott は，自らの講演のアブストラクトをつぎのように締めくくっている。

It was concluded that there is reason to seriously question the concept that water exists in a stable polymeric condition and that contaminants, both inorganic and organic, may account for a number of the physical properties and other phenomena associated with “polywater.”

ほかにも，実験的にも理論的にも，ポリウォーターに関して否定的な意見が大勢を占めている。例えば，鎖状モデルを提出した O’Konski は

we conclude that there are no plausible structures for polywater more stable than the ordinary hydrogen-bonded species.

と書いている。また，正６角形を基礎とする水素結合のモデルの再検証を試みたグループは，

Our theoretical study reveals that the symmetric and asymmetric hexamers are not of major importance in the formation and stabilization of water-II, if indeed water-II does exist.

と結論している。このモデルを提出した当事者のAllen と Kollman も，

...we do not now believe in the existence of anomalous water. ... cyclic, symmetric hydrogen bonding is considerably less stable than the conventional asymmetric form.

と述べている。Allen は，その１０年後，ポリウォーターの出来事があと５年遅かったら，高性能のコンピュータを使用することによって，より短い時間のうちに，より明確な結果に到達していたであろうと述べたという。

１９６０年代の後半，Natureは，Science とともに，ポリウォーターの華やかな舞台を演出した。ポリウォーターの終焉をいち早く察知した Nature は，１９７１年３月５日号のNEWS AND VIEWS の欄に，冷たくも短い記事を掲載した。この記事はつぎの文章ではじまる

It now begins to seem as if the concept of polywater is on its last legs.

理論化学者のW. G. Richards の回想：

In the heady days when “polywater” was believed by many to exist and even to represent a threat to life, theoretical chemists were quick to risk their reputations and lend credence to the myth purely on the grounds of calculations. Since the bursting of the polywater bubble the work of quantum chemists on water and on solvation has been more realistic.

液相の水の構造の理解に貢献したH. S. Frank は，ポリウォーター全盛の時代，The Structure of Ordinary Water と題する地味な論文を Science (1970) に発表している。この論文の脚注にはつぎのように書かれている。

The word “ordinary” is used here to distinguish the subject of this article from the “anomalous” water, sometimes now called “polywater” which has aroused so much recent attention. Whatever else may be said about this material, it seems clear that it is a very different substance from ordinary water. No more mention of it will be made in this article.

Derjaguin 自身が１９７０年にScientific American に書いた総説は，つぎの文章で終わっている。

But here, following the example of Scheherazade, who invariably lapsed into silence at the most interesting place in her story, it is appropriate to end in the certainly that continued investigations of the properties of liquids will lead not only to universal acceptance of the reality of water II but also to the discovery of new and even more surprising phenomena.

Derjaguin は，１０００編を越える論文，著書を残して，１９９４年，９２歳で他界した。ロシア科学アカデミーの二人のメンバーによる追悼記事が Langmuir に掲載されている。"the glorious tradition of Russian science" を担った Derjaguin を讃えるこの記事には，ポリウォーターの記述はない。
