ポリウォーターの化学　

１９６６年の Faraday Discussions 以来，ポリウォーターに関わっていたBernal が，その生涯の最後に執筆したNature の Correspondence "Anomalous" water は，つぎの文章で終わっている。

There is still no adequate explanation of the phenomenon, and no coherent picture of its properties. One of the greatest difficulties in even accepting the existense of a more stable phase is its apparent absence in nature. Indeed, this is the most persuasive evidence of its inability to grow at ordinary water’s expense, for it has stood the test of billion of years..... If it can grow at the expense of ordinary water, we should already be a completely dead planet.

Yet we are not, and totally unlikely to become so from this source. By all means draw the attention of scientists to the dangers of their work, but make sure it is a real danger before alarming everybody else.

Bernal のグループが２年半を費やして行った研究調査結果のまとめ Polywater and Polypollutants は，Bernal が他界した１９７１年に Nature に 出版された。以下に引用するのは，この論文のアブストラクトである。

Some careful experiments and a close look at the literature of polywater give no reason to believe that any new phenomenon has been discovered. Contamination could account for the observed effects.

同じ頃，ポリウォーターを実体を明確にするために，慎重かつ丹念な理論的な考察が行われている。しかし，それがどのように慎重で理詰めの反証であったとしても，理論だけをもって，すべての可能性を否定し，ポリウォーターが幻であることを証明することは不可能である。

最終的な詰めは，化学の実験によってもたらされた。Ｈ_２Ｏ と Ｄ_２Ｏ から，それぞれ，ポリウォーターを作って赤外線吸収スペクトルを測定した結果，両者にはまったく差がないことがわかった。つぎの文章は，化学分析の実験結果を記述した論文 (Science, 1971) のうちのひとつからの引用である。

The ESCA spectra of “polywater” show that this anomalous, high-density, viscous, nonvolatile material contains high concentrations of sodium, potassium, sulfate, chloride, nitrate, borates, silicates, and carbon-oxygen compounds with trace amounts of other impurities but very little water.

ポリウォーターの異常な性質は，水に大量のシリコンが容器の壁から混入したことによるというあっけない幕切れが化学とともにきた。

ポリウォーターは，７５編（ソ連），２２７編 （アメリカ），２１０編 （その他の国）の論文を残してこの世から消えた。論文数の推移は次の図に示すとおりである。
